National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research

The National Institute of Nutrition and Seafood Research (NIFES) is a Norwegian organization linked to the Norwegian Ministry of Fisheries. It acts as an advisor to the Ministry on the "fjord to fork" production chain of seafood and supports the Norwegian fisheries and aquaculture industries. It is also a national reference laboratory for several analytical methods, including the detection of pathogenic parasites in seafood. The institute educates scientists at master- and PhD-level for the University of Bergen, in the disciplines of Fish Nutrition, Quality and Processing of Seafood, and General Nutrition. NIFES employs 40 scientists, 54 technicians, 7 graduate students and 3 apprentices. NIFES also has the editorship of the scientific journal Aquaculture Nutrition, published by Blackwell Science, UK.
Research at NIFES is divided into three major research programs: Seafood Safety, Seafood and Health, and Aquaculture Nutrition. The program on Seafood Safety aims to generate knowledge regarding contaminants, undesirable microbes and parasites. The Seafood and Health program aims to carry out clinical studies that scientifically document beneficial health effects of seafood and marine raw-materials such as fish oils. Collaboration between these two programs opens up the possibility to carry out balanced risk-evaluations of seafood. The Aquaculture Nutrition program focuses on nutrient effects, requirements and their interactions, in all life stages of the major farmed species in Norway, in order to produce fish of good health, which is safe and healthy to eat. The program also assesses the nutritional potential of sustainable and cost-efficient feed resources, such as vegetable oil mixtures and various plant proteins in fish diets without compromising growth, nutrient utilization or health.
Dr. Gro-Ingunn Hemre received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science at the University of Bergen, Norway. Her PhD studies at the Institute of Nutrition, Directorate of Fisheries in Bergen, focussed on carbohydrate utilization in Atlantic cod, evaluating retention, protein sparing, digestibility and secondary stress metabolism. In 1999, she became the Professor in Fish Nutrition. Main focus of her research has been comparative macro-nutrients utilisation in different fish species, mainly Atlantic salmon, mackerel, Atlantic cod and halibut. She also has published refereed papers on vitamins and fatty acids. Dr. Hemre has been the Head of the Aquaculture Nutrition research program at NIFES since 2001. She can be contacted at gro-ingunn.hemre@nifes.no.
SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON AQUATIC NUTRITION

Dates: November 16-19, 2004
Location: Centro de las Artes, Universidad de Sonora, Hermosillo, México
Registration Fees: US $ 350
E-mail: VII_SINA@admvos.uson.mx

The biannual International Symposium on Aquatic Nutrition started in 1993 as a forum for topics related to shrimp nutrition, particularly with respect to Latin America. The species and regional focus has gradually expanded over the past six meetings. The forthcoming symposium aims to have a truly global focus. It will maintain the original format, where oral presentations are given by invited speakers on specific themes. This will be complimented by a poster session on original research work and an oral presentation of each poster. Simultaneous English-Spanish and Spanish-English translations will be provided.
