Web Summary
In the early days of aquaculture, nutritional pathology was limited to understanding of gross deficiency symptoms. Treatment of infectious diseases was limited to chemotherapy. As we gain insight on the physiological mechanisms relating nutrition and health, solutions to maintain the health of farmed fish are increasingly sought in the form of nutrients and additives that play a role in the immune system of animals. The preferred choice is to prevent diseases and promote sustainable farming rather than using chemotherapy to combat outbreaks. This article provides a fundamental understanding of the immune system and the role of nutrition in the immune modulation of aquatic animals.
