Dr H. Shivananda Murthy
Dr. H. Shivananda Murthy has recently been promoted as the Professor of Aquaculture in the College of Fisheries, Mangalore, India. He is one of the leading fish nutritionists in India. He obtained his Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees from the College of Fisheries, Mangalore. His Ph.D. was on the amino acid nutrition of Indian major carps. After completing his Ph.D. his research work has focused on the nutritional aspects of the carps and freshwater prawn. He has also worked on freshwater prawn hatchery production and farming and culture and breeding of carps and shrimps. He has handled eleven research projects as Principal Investigator funded by national and international organizations. He has published more than one hundred research papers and scientific articles in national and international journals. He authored the chapter on carp nutrition in the recent CABI publication: ‘Nutrient requirements and feeding of finfish for aquaculture.’ He is the recipient of prestigious awards namely, ‘Jawaharalal Nehru Award of the government of India, ‘Sir C V Raman Award of the Government of Karnataka and the ‘Best Scientist Award’ of the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. Dr. Murthy has attended and presented research papers in international conferences held at Spain, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia. He conducted advanced post doctoral research in aquaculture nutrition at the Stirling University in Scotland for one year.
The College of Fisheries, Mangalore, is the first institution to offer an undergraduate degree program in fisheries science in India. Formerly under the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, the college is presently part of the newly formed Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University, Bidar, India. Dr. Murthy’s research laboratories are located on the main campus of the college in Mangalore.

ASIAN AQUA FEEDS 2005
As we go to press, the Asian Aqua Feeds 2005 is all set to start in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on April 12, 2005. The two-day seminar has been organized very well. An important outcome of the meeting might be the set up of a regional network of institutions and industry involved in the Asian aqua feed industry. Aqua Feeds: Formulation & Beyond will present the highlights of the meeting in the next issue.

Victam Asia is one of the largest livestock trade shows in Asia. Due to its location in Bangkok, it attracts a number of exhibitors who cater to the aqua feed industry. From 2006 onwards, the exhibition will have a dedicated area for Thai exhibitors. This special area will enable local exhibitors from the animal feed, petfood, aquafeed and rice and grain processing industries to present their products and services to both the Thai markets and to the many visitors that attend the show.

The international meeting, the 12th in the series of symposia that no aquatic animal nutritionist should miss, will be in the southwest Atlantic coast of France in 2006. Pre-registration has just opened. Its organizers, Fish Nutrition Research Unit of Station d'Hydrobiologie I.N.R.A., have announced that the meeting will be preceded by a two day meeting of the thematic network on Fish Oil and Meal Replacement (called FORM). The objective of FORM is to further elucidate aquaculture and healthy eating - with special focus on tailoring the farmed product to consumer needs, by means of scientific networking, management, co-ordination, monitoring and exchange of information on a volunteer basis.
